Around the time I got pregnant, I pretty much stopped wearing makeup. It was so sudden that even my father-in-law remarked he didn’t think he’d ever seen my bare face before—and I’ve been married for 16 years. But my skincare problems had actually started about five years earlier.
At first, my skin just looked dry. Then my foundation started emphasizing every dehydration line instead of making me look better. Eventually, wearing it meant risking a week of breakouts, itching, and skin that actually cracked. Rinse and repeat. Makeup wasn’t making me look better. It was making everything worse.
After trying product after product to repair my damaged skin barrier, I was starting to feel like every promise was snake oil. I had even tried the VaniCream that my dermatologist recommended.
That’s when I just said it’s time to stop. Full stop. SPF? Nope, just hats. Vaseline? Yup. That was all I put on my face for months. I’m not suggesting anyone skip sunscreen—that’s just how bad things had gotten. My skin tolerated practically nothing.
I was beginning to think I’d have to choose between healthy skin and the active ingredients I loved. But ZIIP’s new Barrier Boost collection offered something I didn’t even know I needed: a bridge between protecting my skin barrier and enjoying real skincare again.
I’d love to say that cutting everything out suddenly gave me healthy skin, but it didn’t. At that point, I didn’t need more skincare. I needed protection from moisture loss and fewer potential irritants. Vaseline happened to be the one product my skin could tolerate.
And here’s an important distinction: dry skin naturally produces less oil, while dehydrated skin lacks water. You can have oily skin and still be dehydrated. A damaged skin barrier can make it harder to retain that water, which is why protecting your skin from moisture loss matters so much.
And that’s when ZIIP entered the picture. My ZIIP Halo had been one of the few beauty devices I’d continued using through my skincare hell because it calmed my skin and kept my collagen and elastin production up…as much as it could with zero support for sun exposure, dehydration, and other environmental stressors. So when ZIIP introduced its Refresh Serum and Repair Moisturizer, I was both scared and intrigued. Could I finally ask more of my skin without making it angry again?
How I Started Repairing My Damaged Skin Barrier
My Vaseline-only era taught me a lot. I learned that fragrance was a major irritant for me, and that the fewer ingredients I introduced at once, the easier it was to figure out what my skin could tolerate.
And while it wasn’t exactly a spa treatment to put on, it allowed my skin a break from so many potential irritants that were making my skin angry. That one calming product may look different for everyone.
But while it was wonderful at preventing moisture loss, it wasn’t everything I wanted from skincare. I wanted hydration, barrier-supporting ingredients, and eventually, the actives that could help bring back my plump, glowy skin.

ENHANCE Carefully chosen actives + ZIIP Wanted more visible benefits without overwhelming my reactive skin. Goodbye Vaseline! |
The amazing part? By stage two, I could tolerate a very basic moisturizer that had irritated my skin just a month earlier.
Though I was making progress, wow, did I miss real skincare. SKINCARE, people! I wanted more than skin that wasn’t angry anymore. I wanted my glow back. I wanted more visible benefits without returning to the cycle of irritation.
Why ZIIP’s Barrier Boost Skincare Caught My Attention
I’ve been using ZIIP’s Halo for years. Having access to a customized electrical facial has been life-changing for me (see my skin over a year here). In fact, it’s how I lasted so long on Vaseline without going nuts—the craziest fast I’ve ever done. And I’ve done some full-on water fasts. But never have I gone without proper skincare.
When ZIIP told me they were coming out with skincare and wanted me to try it, I actually groaned. Me, a beauty editor, let the box sit on my counter for a couple of days, dreading another broken promise.
So why isn’t ZIIP’s Barrier Boost collection just another skincare promise that sounds too good to be true? Here’s what caught my attention once I finally looked at the science.
A Closer Look at the Science
Why ZIIP skincare is on my radar
01Skincare Designed Around Skin Bioelectricity
ZIIP formulates with the skin’s natural electrical environment in mind, using complementary ingredients and delivery technologies such as encapsulation. The goal is to get more from carefully selected actives, engineered to work with the skin, rather than simply chasing higher percentages.
02Unusually Chosen Actives + Supercharged Actives
Refresh Serum: Tranexamic acid (key active), encapsulated resveratrol (supercharged active) and hyaluronic acid for hydration and uneven-looking tone.
Repair Moisturizer: Bio-identical ceramides (key active) and activated moringa seed extract (supercharged active) to support the moisture barrier. Moringa is an especially interesting botanical to me, although its specialized extract shouldn’t be confused with ordinary moringa seed oil.
Both are fragrance free, lowering the chance of irritation. These complementary actives share the workload, creating effective formulations that work with precision instead of increased concentrations.
03Measured Results, Not Just Opinions
ZIIP reports an eight-week, dermatologist-supervised clinical testing program using skin-measurement instruments—not simply participant questionnaires.
REFRESH SERUM: FINISHED-FORMULA RESULTS AT 8 WEEKS
+44.6% skin hydration
−23.6% water loss
−7.3% visible redness

Wow, was I wrong.
Within just a couple of days of adding ZIIP’s Refresh Serum and Repair Moisturizer to my routine, my skin felt amazing. And with hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid and barrier-supporting ceramides, it’s looking more pillowy than it has in years. I actually started wanting to wear makeup again.
I can’t tell you what the long-term benefits will be since I’ve only recently started using these products. But I can tell you that my skin feels and looks different.
ZIIP Refresh Serum and Repair Moisturizer: My Results
I’m actually really impressed with how well my skin not only accepted this change in skin care products, but seems to be strengthening. My skin’s natural barrier even feels better after I wash my face. You know that tight feeling after you wash your face? Gone.
It’s not just the products. It’s changing my skin for the better and I can feel it.
ZIIP Refresh Serum
So how does Refresh feel going on? It’s thin like water, silky in texture, but slightly tacky until it dries. Great for skin types that need a drink.
The ingredients are unusual, too. Hyaluronic acid helps with hydration (I like following HA serums with a moisturizer to keep that hydration from escaping), topical tranexamic acid targets uneven skin tone and the appearance of dark spots, and encapsulated resveratrol provides antioxidant support. Not only is it a supportive skin barrier repair serum, but I feel like I’m getting anti-aging benefits without stressing out my skin. Personally I love the resveratrol in it because it’s been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties, free radical reduction, and promotion of healthy skin cells–all without skin irritation.
And for anyone looking for a tranexamic acid serum for brightening skin and improving pigmentation, I really like this gentler formulation.
ZIIP Repair Moisturizer
The Barrier Boost Repair Moisturizer reminds me of a water moisturizer. Kinda thin like Avène, but I feel the barrier forming because it doesn’t just absorb right away.
It contains bio-identical ceramides to support the skin barrier and activated moringa, which ZIIP selected as one of its featured ingredients.
But here’s what really impressed me when I read the actual ingredient list: this formula contains Ceramide NP, AP, and EOP, plus cholesterol and stearic acid. Those are all ingredients associated with the lipid structure of the skin barrier. It isn’t just relying on one trendy ingredient.
And while the texture is surprisingly lightweight to me, I love that it still leaves my skin feeling protected. It’s the kind of moisturizer I want when my skin needs help locking in moisture and hydration.
Who Is ZIIP Barrier Boost Best For?
Needless to say, I feel the pairing is a great system of hydration, emollients, and occlusives.
While I wouldn’t recommend this as my first choice for someone whose primary concern is acne or wrinkles, I think it’s a great choice for someone who has normal/dry skin and/or a compromised barrier.
That doesn’t mean acne-prone skin can’t benefit from barrier support. It just means these aren’t targeted acne treatments, and I would choose THIS collection for addressing deeper wrinkles.
Do You Need Both ZIIP Refresh Serum and Repair Moisturizer?
While I don’t necessarily think you need to stick to one brand of skincare when choosing products, most companies choose their product lines with a bit of synergy in mind. ZIIP is no exception.
For example, I mentioned above that hyaluronic acid benefits from an occlusive on top (here’s a great explanation on why). This is because it helps draw water into the outer layers of your skin. You also want to keep that hydration from escaping, which is why I like following a hydrating serum with a good skin barrier repair cream.
I can honestly say that ZIIP’s Refresh Serum and Repair Moisturizer have two different jobs that work beautifully together with ingredients that share the workload.
Would I buy both? For my skin, absolutely. But if I had to choose just one, I think ZIIP’s Repair Moisturizer is really quite something.
Refresh Serum I recommend just as fervently, with one caveat. While hyaluronic acid is incredibly hydrating for many people, not everyone’s skin loves it. If you’ve had trouble with HA products in the past, that’s something to keep in mind. But I honestly don’t know of many skin barrier serums that offer more than a reduction in redness. ZIIP’s approach to pairing actives with the skin’s natural electrical environment is just incredible to me.
Personally, my skin is loving the pairing. And if your skin tolerates hyaluronic acid well, I think the two make a wonderful team.
If you’re still figuring out whether your skin is dry, dehydrated, or dealing with a compromised barrier, I’ve explained those differences in my complete dry-skin guide.
My Final Thoughts on Skin Barrier Repair
For the past couple of years I had accepted my dehydration lines and wrinkles as part of the aging process and my compromised skin barrier. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Some of those temporary fine lines were more noticeable because my skin wasn’t retaining moisture the way it should–when your skin feels like sandpaper it’s no wonder!
Be patient with yourself! Getting your skin back takes time, just like anything else. Reduce excessive moisture loss, work towards that baseline, and then find a line like ZIIP’s to take things a step further.
For me, that means finally looking forward to wearing makeup again.

Frequently Asked Questions: Skin Barrier Repair
Is Vaseline enough to repair a damaged skin barrier?
Vaseline helps prevent moisture loss, but it isn’t a complete skincare routine. For me, it was how I got back to baseline. It was not a complete solution.
My mom’s barrier became compromised after she developed rosacea. For her, Vaseline was too heavy of an occlusive. She went completely bare faced–not even soap. I have another friend that went with Lanolin.
Since our skin is different, I hope the biggest takeaway is to strip your routine to the bare bones when your skin is compromised, not that my one product will work for you too.
Of course, simplifying your routine doesn’t mean everyone should stop washing their face or skip sun protection. The goal is to avoid what irritates your particular skin while still caring for it safely.
How long does it take to repair a damaged skin barrier?
Oof. My honest answer is, I can only say for myself, I’m still repairing it—years later. Once I found my one magic product that didn’t irritate my skin, it suddenly went fast and took just a couple months.
Mild irritation may improve within days, if you catch it. A barrier that has been compromised for a long time may take longer to heal.
My advice? Don’t keep trying new things while you’re still in stage 1 (stopping the irritation). Instead, give your skin a break and work on supporting it from the inside, too. Pay attention to your essential fatty acids, water intake, minerals, electrolytes, and gut health.
And there’s science behind that. Research on diet and skin-barrier function shows that fatty acids and certain dietary interventions can influence the skin’s ability to retain moisture. The gut–skin axis is also a real biological connection, with gut microorganisms influencing inflammation and skin health. A 2026 review of clinical trials even found that certain oral probiotics improved skin hydration and reduced transepidermal water loss.
Drinking enough water matters for overall health, although drinking extra water or taking additional electrolytes isn’t a guaranteed way to speed barrier recovery.
Healing your skin is usually a balance of what you put on it, but also what you put inside your body. So drink plenty of water and remember UV rays can be drying! Environmental, internal, and external factors all influence our skin’s moisture levels.
Can dehydration lines go away?
Yes, dehydration lines can become less noticeable once your skin retains moisture better. But it’s important to note the difference between wrinkles caused by aging and those caused by dehydration, since dehydration lines can be temporary. It’s also hard to know which ones you have when you’ve been dehydrated for a long time.
I had one line that my esthetician thought was a scar, it was so deep. It practically disappeared in less than a month! I attribute that to the plumping effect of ZIIP’s Refresh Serum that helped with my fine lines and wrinkles, the Repair Moisturizer to prevent dehydration lines, and a dedicated 26 minutes of nanocurrent every other night.
And with the right treatments to support collagen production, even some established wrinkles can become less noticeable over time.
Can you use active ingredients while repairing your skin barrier?
My eyes are getting wide just writing this. Red alert! If you were dealing with what I was dealing with, the answer is no. Absolutely no. Even running the air conditioning dried out my skin. I didn’t need any additions to my environment.
But the real answer is it depends on the ingredients, the formula, and how damaged and sensitive your skin has become. Once your skin is comfortable, it’s time to move past this stage so you can actively help your skin heal…gently and very very slowly.
I’d also avoid harsh cleansers and very hot water while your skin is reactive. And because one person’s gentle product can be another person’s nightmare, patch test each new product and introduce things one at a time. Persistent cracking, burning, or rashes are good reasons to see a dermatologist, particularly if you’re dealing with a skin condition like eczema or rosacea.
Once your skin is comfortable enough to start reintroducing products, I’d begin with a fragrance-free sensitive skin moisturizer containing some of these barrier-supporting ingredients:
Ceramides: Look for types of ceramides like Ceramide NP, Ceramide AP, or Ceramide EOP. These help replenish the lipids that keep your skin’s protective barrier intact.
Cholesterol: Yep, cholesterol! It’s naturally found in your skin and works alongside ceramides and fatty acids. Look for Cholesterol on the ingredient list.
Fatty acids: Look for ingredients like Linoleic Acid or Stearic Acid. These help support the skin’s lipid barrier and hydrate skin.
Soothing Ingredients: Panthenol (provitamin B5), allantoin, magnesium, or moringa seed extract can all be beneficial if your skin likes the soothing ingredient.
You don’t necessarily need all three in one skin barrier repair moisturizer, but they’re good ingredients to look for.
Interestingly, ZIIP’s Repair Moisturizer checks all three boxes: bio-available ceramides (NP, AP, and EOP), cholesterol, and stearic acid. It’s one of the reasons I find this moisturizer so impressive. It isn’t relying on a single trendy ingredient to support the skin barrier.
