CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet Review: My 6 Month Results

July 30, 2026 Glamour

Mirror selfie wearing the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet during my six-month review and testing period.

CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet Review: My 6-Month Results (before and after)

Short answer: After six months of consistent use, I noticed thicker-looking hair, improved overall density, and significantly more baby hairs around my hairline. My widow’s peak didn’t completely return to what it looked like in my twenties, but my temples no longer feel noticeably sparse when I pull my hair back.

In the review below, I’ll share my before-and-after photos, explain what improved (and what didn’t), and help you decide whether the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet is worth the investment.

My Before & After Photos

I intentionally photographed both sides of my hairline under similar lighting with my hair pulled back.

I also avoided coloring my roots between photos so darker regrowth wouldn’t artificially make my scalp appear fuller. None of these photos have been edited beyond cropping and resizing.

Here’s the exact CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet I used throughout this review.

How I Review Products

Brands and PR agencies often send me products to test. Receiving a product doesn’t guarantee coverage or a positive recommendation. I only publish reviews after extensive real-world testing and when I believe the product is genuinely worth discussing.

Disclosure:
CurrentBody provided the LED Hair Growth Helmet for testing and compensated me for creating this article. All opinions and results shared are my own.

My hair loss story

I remember when I first started losing my perfectly heart shaped hairline. I used to go down the comparison aisle of hell. Well, at least my hairline isn’t as bad as that person’s. I never understood why people compared the way they did in such a judgy way. Until I got it.

2021 photo showing hair thinning at the temples and hairline before using the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet.

December 2021

Without even realizing it, I’d become someone who quietly compared myself to other people to feel better about my own hair. I hate admitting that out loud, but hey—confession is good for the soul, right? My own vanity taught me a little empathy.

You see, I had gotten very sick in 2019. I could barely eat anything without joint pain and went through a time when I couldn’t even walk to the bathroom without help. By 2021, my health was improving, but my hair (pictured above) never recovered.

I’m sure aging didn’t help either since hormones change everything, but I had a baby at 39 in 2023, and my hairline did get better for a time. And then it got worse again. I wasn’t trying to get my twenty year old hairline back–I just wanted to stop thinking about it every time I pulled my hair back.

I tried several shampoos and conditioners, rosemary oil, castor oil, all sorts of things, but the problem is I never wanted to stick with any of it. They may help but they’re expensive and oily.

Thankfully, I don’t think I have ever had hair follicles completely die. So I knew gentle interventions still had hope.

I officially believe red light therapy can help revive struggling hair follicles before they’re gone for good.

What improved after 6 months

I’d like to say wearing a hat during the day helps. Better nutrition and more targeted supplementation help. But I was at the point where I’d been trying that for a couple years and it just wasn’t enough. My hairs just shed and broke too quickly to actually see better density and thickness. You can see in my 2021 vs my before photo in 2026 my hairline got better. But never did I feel comfortable wearing my hair back in a ponytail like I do now.

A ponytail is probably my favorite change. When you look at my before photos, you can see the short baby hairs are not long enough to pull back; and my baby hairs had been shedding, not growing. Photographing my widow’s peak tells me 2 things: The (anagen) growth phase of my hair is extending and I’m getting fresh new healthy hair growth.

Unexpected Perks

I loved that my forehead got some red light daily even on days I wasn’t treating my face for wrinkles. While I can’t say I noticed a huge improvement, I did notice a minor decrease in lines.

Since red light therapy is being studied for much more than hair growth, I occasionally wore the helmet during a mild headache. It was a nice bonus that my headache resolved while I was wearing it.

What didn’t improve

While I didn’t see dramatic 20-something hair growth, I’m actually really curious what a year of use will look like. Hair growth is a tricky process and natural alternatives require months of patience and consistency.

What the Experience Was Actually Like

Comfort

It’s comfortable and didn’t wobble on my head while I did things. The helmet comes in 2 sizes. I have a tiny head where even headphones are tricky for me. I kinda wish I had asked to test both sizes, but the Medium was definitely the right size for me. You can go by the measurements listed in the FAQs at the bottom of the product page.

I did find it extremely uncomfortable to wear while wearing the LED mask but perfect while using the Currentbody stand up panel.

Using the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet while wearing the CurrentBody Skin LED Light Therapy Face Mask Series 2 during my treatment routine.

Convenience

I love that there are built-in headphones. Any time I reach for my headphones I do my helmet first. Weirdly, my favorite time to wear it is when I’m gardening in the morning–I’m mostly protecting my head, get to listen to music or a podcast, and it’s a natural 10 minute timer when I’m watering our fruit trees.

Battery

I never consciously tested this but you should get six to seven 10-minute treatments (an hour long battery). However, the helmet is easily plugged in between uses, so I mostly just did that.

Routine

I really tried to do seven times a week, but if I’m being honest I think I averaged five days a week. While they do say ensuring your scalp is clean is a good idea before using led light therapy, I think my results speak for themselves. Dirty hair didn’t get in the way of increasing my hair density.

Who I Think This Helmet Is Best For

Buy it if…

Increased blood flow could help wake up your sleeping follicles.
The health of your hair changes depending on your habits
Your hair breaks before it grows.
You just started to see hair loss and thinning.
You have no hair loss and just want thicker hair.
You’ve seen topicals or vitamins help even a little, proving the hair isn’t dead.
You already have a hair growth program but want a little more oomph to your routine.

Skip it if…

You know your hair is dead, gone, female pattern baldness or otherwise, or if your hair loss is from scars. Obviously, I’m the kind of person that always thinks, “Try it! You never know!” But I would only recommend this if you’re okay knowing it’s a shot in the dark and it’s going to take months to see change.

Consider something else if…

You haven’t tried the basics, like addressing nutrition and stress. While I would absolutely recommend the Currentbody Skin LED Hair Growth Helmet, it’s not a systemic change. It will penetrate the scalp, yes, but it won’t change your body’s complete physiology.

I believe this is a great reason to do an HTMA test since your hair tells you a lot about your mineral balance, which can directly affect hair loss. With all my issues I’ve done it all!

I would also look into other options if you have a different type of hair loss than I did. For example, I can’t speak to chemo hair loss or scarring hair loss because I haven’t experienced either.

Why I Think My Results Looked the Way They Did

I really did have a great baseline for this test. I had tried pretty much everything with minimal results. I wanted something that wasn’t topical so I could use it in the morning since my night routine was kind of full. It was easy to be consistent with something that slipped quietly into my routine. I could do it while brushing my teeth, gardening, cooking, making the coffee, watching tv. It was even fun for my toddler to watch me use because I look like mommy robot.

In all, I really think my success came from knowing my nutrition was optimal and being consistent.

Next up…I’m going to add back in the shampoos and conditioners and oils when I remember. Maybe getting my 20’s hairline back really is possible. But it’s sure nice not being dependent on hair oiling or minoxidil.

Does Science Support My Experience?

The strongest published evidence for hair-growth light therapy comes from randomized, sham-controlled studies of low-level light therapy (LLLT), many of which use laser or combined laser/LED devices. CurrentBody’s helmet uses 120 red LEDs spanning 620–660 nm, a wavelength range that overlaps much of the published research. The company has also completed its own independent clinical study.

I wrote about all the benefits of LED light therapy here.

Here’s a study on 650nm lengthening the anagen (growth) phase

FAQs

*Not a doctor. These opinions are my own.

Does the CurrentBody LED Hair Growth Helmet actually work?

Absolutely, if you’re the right candidate for it. See above.

What is the best LED device for hair loss?

The current evidence suggests the sweet spot for hair growth lies within the red light spectrum of roughly 630–660 nm. Not just 630nm, and not just 650nm, but in between the range.

More important than chasing a single number is choosing a well-designed device that delivers clinically studied wavelengths across your entire scalp.

That’s one of the reasons I like CurrentBody. I’ve watched the company for years. They used to sell a lot more third-party devices, but over time they’ve started developing their own. What I’ve consistently seen is that they don’t seem interested in making a “me too” product. They usually explain what they’re trying to improve, then back it up with testing before bringing it to market.

How long before I noticed results?

It’s gradual. I’m honestly glad I didn’t do before and after shots any earlier than six months. I think I would’ve been discouraged. But everyone is different! The test subjects they list on the website from their study had results after 16 weeks.

Does it work on a receding hairline?
Yes, as long as you catch it before the hair itself dies. If your dihydrotestosterone dht levels are high, I would recommend doing LED therapy and topicals to stimulate hair growth.

Does it work for postpartum hair loss?
Yes! I actually lent the helmet to my friend for this and it did help.

Can you use it with minoxidil?

I’ve seen it recommended for faster and better results. If you have androgenetic alopecia it’s worth a shot!

How often do you need to use it?

Their site says, For best results, use the helmet daily for a minimum of 16 weeks. Each session lasts 10 minutes, and consistency is key. After visible results are achieved, you can reduce use for maintenance.

Is it worth the money?

If you’ve experienced hair loss, you’ll know it’s worth it. Hair frames your face. It’s emotional.

Are there side effects (is led therapy for hair growth safe)?

With all of my health issues, I had a red scalp when I first started but that got better over time. I think side effects are pretty unusual with light therapy for hair and skin but sensitivity can occur. Not a doctor or board certified dermatologist. 😉

What is proven to be the best thing to stop hair loss?

I currently see value in combining LED treatments with topicals and nutritional analysis through bloodwork and HTMA testing. I prefer LED over lasers because of the low risk of sensitivity. Minoxidil and Rosemary Oil are at the top of my list for hair loss topicals, which you can find info on here.

Would I choose this one again?

If I were shopping for a hair growth helmet today, this is still the one I’d choose. Not because I think it’s a miracle cure, but because it’s one of the few beauty devices I’ve tested that quietly fit into my routine. Ten minutes while gardening, brushing my teeth, or listening to a podcast was enough to keep me consistent—and I think consistency is ultimately why I saw results.

I genuinely thought ZIIP and NuFace were basically the same.

They’re not.

After using both for years, I realized the difference isn’t about intensity — it’s about how the technology actually works.

One is more straightforward and muscle-focused.

The other is designed to do a lot more.

That’s why I don’t reach for them the same way anymore.

If you’re deciding between them, I broke down everything (including what I’d actually repurchase) in the full comparison.

I find there’s too many people suffering from poorly fit bras. 😤 They ride up, stab you, and make your boobs look like they’re plotting an escape. Postpartum and pregnancy skincare ▶️ Boy was my skin reactive while I was pregnant. I had to go beyond the recommended exclusion list! If you have #sensitiveskin this list is for you too—I wish I had paid attention to pregnancy skincare lists before I was pregnant because it eliminated a lot of things I was sensitive to. Just wrote about the @ziipbeauty microcurrent tool that I think is finally getting me my best skin yet. Saving my skin while not using retinol. Pesto Tortellini with Caramelized Peaches! 🍑
Tomatoes, you’re not invited to my @taste_republic pasta party! 🍅 Over the past couple years I’ve been moving away from putting tomatoes on everything and this recipe did not disappoint. This is a one skillet recipe you can make in under 30 minutes. I put some alternative ideas (pumpkin!) to peaches on the recipe blog post (bio link).
.
With pasta this good, telling anyone my cheese tortelloni was gluten-free and certified plant-based was a need-to-know basis. That way, all my Vegan and meat-loving friends could both enjoy with zero extra work on my part. It’s so good, it’ll make you forget all about tomatoes and gluten!💃 #wholefoods #tasterepublicatwholefoods #tasterepublic #notomatoes #glutenfreerecipes #easyrecipes #healthyish #easydinner #asmr #eat

We explored Los Angeles with @gocity and WOW! am I amazed at the big ticket items included in our passes. So much fun! We went on a Warner Bros. studio tour and hopped across the street to Universal and did their tour in the amusement park as well. Downtown, we had a blast exploring Hollywood and Highland, the Walk of Fame, Madame Tussaud’s, the Chinese Theatre… Six Flags was included too. #gocity gave us each things we loved to do.
