The Vanilla Plum Edit
Best Treatments for Skin Texture & Enlarged Pores
Uneven texture can come from several different things: dehydration, irritation, sun damage, collagen loss, congestion, or true scarring. The best treatment depends on which part of the problem you are actually trying to solve.
If I had to start over…
I would stop trying to polish my skin with an endless rotation of products.
I would first make sure my skin was calm and healthy. Then I would use fractional laser to refine the surface, nanocurrent to support overall skin quality, and LED as a gentle supporting treatment.
First: Make Sure It Is Actually a Texture Problem
Small bumps, pustules, redness, burning, or sudden roughness can sometimes reflect rosacea, dermatitis, irritation, or another active skin condition rather than ordinary congestion or enlarged pores.
I would not use a laser, microneedling pen, strong exfoliant, or other intentionally irritating treatment during an unexplained flare. Calm the skin first and ask a dermatologist about persistent, painful, spreading, or recurring symptoms.
My Treatment Ranking
š„ Fractional Laser
This is my first choice when the goal is smoother-looking texture, smaller-looking pores, more even tone, and gradual refinement of shallow surface irregularities.
š„ Nanocurrent
ZIIP does not resurface the skin the way a fractional laser does. I think of it as a complementary tool for overall skin quality, brightness, plumping, and the healthier-looking finish I see with consistent use.
š„ LED Therapy
Red and near-infrared LED are supporting treatments rather than true resurfacing. I use them to support calmer, healthier-looking skin and gradually improve the overall appearance of my complexion.
4ļøā£ Barrier Care & Sun Protection
Dehydration and irritation can make every pore, line, and uneven patch look more obvious. Gentle cleansing, adequate moisture, and daily sun protection help the skin look smoother while protecting the results of more intensive treatments.
5ļøā£ Microneedling for Scars
Microneedling deserves consideration when indented scars are the main concern. For ordinary pores and general texture, however, it is not where I would personally begināespecially with reactive skin.
The Short Answer
If my skin barrier was healthy and my primary concern was texture rather than facial sagging, I would choose fractional laser first. I would then use nanocurrent and LED for the different roles they play instead of expecting one device to do everything.
Why Fractional Laser Comes First
Fractional lasers treat microscopic zones of skin while leaving surrounding areas untreated. Depending on the laser, this can encourage gradual remodeling while requiring less recovery than more aggressive fully ablative resurfacing.
Professional treatments such as Clear + Brilliant and at-home devices such as the Tria FRX belong to the broader non-ablative fractional laser category, but they are not equivalent treatments.
I think of Clear + Brilliant as the professional option and Tria as a gentler, repeatable at-home alternative or maintenance tool. My own Tria results were clearest in my skin texture, pore appearance, brightness, and overall refinement.
A home device should never be described as an exact replacement for the strength, customization, or medical oversight of an in-office laser. Its advantage is convenience and consistencyānot identical power.
Where ZIIP Fits
Laser and nanocurrent are not interchangeable.
I use fractional laser when I want to refine the canvas. I use ZIIP when I want the skin to look brighter, healthier, and more alive while also addressing concerns such as facial lift and contour.
The visible changes I have experienced with ZIIP are part of my personal testing. Nanocurrent does not have the same body of clinical evidence for resurfacing pores and texture that fractional laser does, so I would not present it as a substitute for laser resurfacing.
Where LED Fits
LED is not an exfoliator and it does not remove the surface of the skin.
Red and near-infrared light are better understood as photobiomodulation treatments. Research suggests that certain protocols may improve signs of photoaging and support collagen-related skin changes over time, but the outcome depends on the wavelengths, dose, device, and consistency.
For me, LED is the gentle support player: useful for overall skin quality and especially appealing when I do not want another harsh or product-heavy step.
When Microneedling Makes More Sense
Microneedling can be a legitimate treatment for indented scars, including atrophic acne scars. My own scars are from chicken poxānot acneāand that was the reason I experimented with it.
I no longer think everyone with visible pores or mildly uneven skin needs to create controlled wounds in order to improve the way the skin looks.
For scar treatment, professional microneedling may be worth discussing with a qualified provider. Depth, sterility, skin tone, the type of scar, and the presence of an active inflammatory skin condition all matter.
My older at-home microneedling article documents what I personally did. It should not be read as individualized medical instruction or as a recommendation to use deep needles at home.
Choose the Tool for the Actual Problem
Rough or uneven surface
Fractional laser is where I would start once the skin is calm and healthy.
Pores that look more visible with age or sun damage
Fractional laser, sun protection, and barrier care make the most sense to me.
Indented scars
Discuss professional fractional laser or microneedling with a dermatologist. Different scar patterns may respond to different procedures.
Red, burning, bumpy, or pustular skin
Do not assume it is ordinary acne or texture. Pause irritating treatments and have recurrent symptoms properly identified.
Dull or tired-looking skin without true scarring
This is where I am most likely to use ZIIP, LED, hydration, and daily sun protection.
