Busy moms, raise your hand! My skin and my skin care routine has changed dramatically since my daughter arrived. Gone are the days of leisurely self care. Now, I’m a master multitasker, weaving my healthy skin goals into my morning routine while my toddler mirrors my ZIIP routine (toddlers love those beauty tools). I try to make it as quick and efficient as possible –no double-cleanse marathons here.
If mornings are tight, skip the 10-step hype flooding Reddit and Healthline’s cookie-cutter lists. My five-step morning skincare routine delivers pro-level radiance over time, shielding against free radicals and signs of aging without stealing your entire morning.
Inspired by celebrity skin experts like Melanie Simon of ZIIP, I’ve tested luxury tools to craft hacks that maximize glow. Fine lines? Softened with consistent ZIIP and red light therapy. Breakouts? Banished with a 90-second ZIIP zap. Skin tone? Evened out for a no-makeup glow. Unlike night, where I indulge in 12 restorative steps (watch for my night routine!), mornings are about fortifying my skin barrier for the day’s chaos—pollutants, UV, blue light from content creation. No eye cream here—save the many creams and oils for nighttime rituals. Ready to glow on autopilot? Let’s dive in.
Why my short routine should be your morning toolbox
First off, it’s not just time that makes me reserve long, drawn-out routines for night—it’s science. Skin cell turnover peaks nocturnally (up to 3x faster, per Journal of Investigative Dermatology) for heavy hitting deep restoration routines.
My morning goals are completely different. Mornings are for arming my skin barrier against free radicals, pollutants, UV, and blue light from too much scrolling. This isn’t Reddit’s one-size-fits-all cleanser obsession or Healthline’s cookie-cutter lists. My morning skincare routine is a shield with 4 core steps with optional targeting for those rough nights.
What’s your biggest morning skin struggle—lines, tiredness, acne prone skin, or something else? Drop it in the comments; I’m listening!
Pre-Step: Morning Sun for a free glow boost
First thing in the morning, I step outside to embrace 10 minutes of unprotected sun–optional but an elixir for healthy skin and more. For amplified benefits, get your sun before you turn on artificial lights or reach for your phone. Morning sun exposure can sync your circadian rhythm, boost your mood, energy, and Vitamin D with minimal UV or free radical damage. J. Photochemistry, 2023
Use apps like UV Index Widget Worldwide or Dminder to track the best exposure (UVA and UVB) times and Vitamin D.

Morning light delivers blue, red, and infrared light for reduced blemishes, inflammation, and brighten skin tone.
For extra glow, try a 16-minute 4×4 interval walk to enhance circulation, no costly masks needed. Bonus that exercise reduces fine lines and wrinkles by reducing stress levels. 😉
Skip this if time’s tight—core steps stay under 9 minutes.
My morning skincare routine order
Step 1: Targeted Cleanse
Full-face cleansing is overrated and unnecessary without a reason such as oily or acne prone skin. Too much cleansing can strip dry skin’s barrier unless you have excess sebum.
However, if you’ve read my article on How to eliminate 11 lines, you know I wear Frownies every night to keep the wrinkles at bay. With that, comes residue that I need to wash off my face. So I do need cleanser for my particular routine. Right now I’m using Avene’s extremely gentle cleanser for a fragrance free, gentle wakeup. I use this as an opportunity for a mini massage for 20 seconds and some quick facial exercises to boost circulation and then I wash it off (yes, I know you don’t have to).
Fun fact: Avene’s Cleanser removes makeup too, so it’s a hard worker for night time routines too. It’s a water based cleanser (not an oil based cleanser).
Want to do redlight but don’t want the extra step? Use a red light cleansing device for 2 in 1.
On the weekends and when I’m not in a hurry, this is when I step outside and take my morning minerals with a glass of lemon water for added antioxidant support with vitamin C and to break my fast.
Step 2: Skin Evaluation–Mirror Check for targeted Fixes
If I do everything right at night, this step doesn’t exist. I expect my skin to glow post-nighttime facial, but life happens.
So this is where I check my skin before I put makeup on. Otherwise, sometimes I have regrets–it’s awful to realize I need massive exfoliation for those dead skin cells so my foundation looks smooth (I prefer night time chemical exfoliators) after I have half my face routine done. I’ve had to start over and it’s not pretty.
Do yourself a favor and ask: Do I have any new issues that have popped up this morning? The ZIIP Dot is a life saver for acne; just dab a little calming clear gel and zap that inflammation away in 90 seconds. So quick to shrink those little red bumps that it’s hard to remember if it’s magic or science.
When my skin looks tired or red or if I have under eye circles, I use the ZIIP Halo’s “Founder’s Favorite” app routine for my sensitive skin to quickly calm it down or bring circulation to my face. The ZIIP Halo is a multi tasker worth having! If you have an occasional zit, the ZIIP Halo can work on that as well. If you get pimples often, use the ZIIP dot.
If I wake up and it’s obvious I’ve been side sleeping because my eyebrow sunk a little low (see my 11 lines post), I use “The Lift” 4 minute treatment in the ZIIP app to raise that eyebrow while simultaneously getting a mini facial with the ZIIP Gels that range from hyaluronic acid and glycerin to copper and more. Then I recleanse with ice cold water to reduce inflammation–great for puffiness and dark circles.

Step 3: Toner – Soothe and Protect
Arcona Trial pads were my toner love at first sight. They’re so nourishing with cranberry extract and fatty acids calm my sensitive skin while balancing pH for better serum absorption. Swipe, then fold to buff neck, fighting signs of aging like “tech neck.” They also cleanse away any dirt that may be left after leaving your pillow.
Step 4: Vitamin C – Brighten and Protect
While my skin is still damp from the toner, I put on Cerise+C for instant barrier protection and glow. If I do ZIIP in step 2, my Vitamin C absorbs even better since the ZIIP stimulates fibroblasts and improves cellular metabolism, coaxing my skin to better utilize my Vitamin C serum, collagen synthesis, and skin brightening effects.
Here’s the tip I learned from Melanie Simon of ZIIP: Instead of waiting 10 minutes while the Vitamin C soaks in, I go make breakfast and drink my morning bevy. This way I don’t need to keep checking if it has fully absorbed and I don’t risk putting on my SPF too soon.
Plus zinc-based sunscreens don’t always play well with Vitamin C, so I allow my skin a minute to adjust before adding zinc to the skin barrier. This prevents overwhelming all skin types–dry skin, sensitive, oily skin and acne-prone skin.
Hack: Add some collagen powder (I’ve been hooked on this one for years since it dissolves easily and has no smell) and vitamin C powder into your morning smoothie for internal glow. I like NAC* and creatine* (*not a doctor). If you haven’t gotten on the creatine train yet, there’s been a lot of research touted lately from brain health to muscle health to better pregnancies to even skin health. I mostly use it for brain health and for days I don’t get a great night’s sleep.
Step 5: Sunscreen – The Ultimate Skin Protection
If you’re confused how we got from Vitamin C serum straight to sunscreen, I didn’t skip a step. I just don’t need it most of the time…and I have dry skin! Can you believe it?
I’m obsessed with Sky & Sol’s zinc based sunscreen because it’s basically food for the skin, broad spectrum, it uses tallow to enhance the skin’s natural barrier, jojoba oil, has zero white cast, and I don’t have to wait the standard 15 minutes for sun protection when wearing this mineral-based sunscreen. Unlike chemical sunscreens, it provides immediate protection.
Jojoba oil is my favorite of all the skin oils since it’s an anti-inflammatory, balances excess oil by mimicking sebum, has Vitamin E for a hard working antioxidant, and is so gentle for sensitive skin.
Basically, since using this product, I’ve become less dependent on so many products and concentrated more on being diligent with my anti-aging tools like ZIIP. Admittedly, sometimes it’s my only step when I wake up.
Fun fact, zinc oxide can help fight against hyperpigmentation, boost collagen, reduce inflammation, and reduce acne. I don’t even own salicylic acid anymore.
If you are wearing makeup, good news! Many people use beef tallow as a makeup primer. If your makeup doesn’t sit right, look at oil vs water based foundations.
Side note: Other than always applying products from thinnest to thickest (for creams and oils), there are no rules! Add steps if you need. If your skin feels tight after following these steps, feel free to throw in that extra hydration for your face or eye area tomorrow. Pay attention to how your skin feels in step 2.
My four step skincare routine has been a lifeline for my healthy skin. Most days, this routine takes me under 10 minutes. That’s the beauty of having one goal with multi-taskers for products.
Time for breakfast, applying makeup, and whatever else is next for your day!
