I’m 41, dry, and so sensitive that actives make me look like a tomato in a blender. Unfortunately I had to ditch the chemical roulette years ago. Since then I’ve built a tool-only routine I can lean into that actually works—no redness, no downtime.
These are the 6 best skincare tools I’ve used for over a year (tested 12+ months on my own face).
Sadly, I don’t do retinoids–they just inflame my skin. I shy away from actives in general. But tools? They’re my home beauty heroes.
Here’s my regimen: ZIIP 5 days a week (no skipping), and RF 1x/week, LED 2–3x
Works for all skin types.
P.S. Black Friday deals are live this week. Perfect time to shop for those holiday gifts!
ZIIP Halo = Your Skin’s Swiss Army Knife: App includes 17 facial modes, face mask-level glow, and full home beauty daily routines. See full section for all treatments.
2-Min Quiz (because we’re busy)
- Skin stings with actives? → Sensitive → Start with Dermalux Panel
- Flaking or dullness creeping in? → Dry → Gua Sha or ZIIP Halo
- Want one tool for literally everything? → ZIIP Halo

My 7 Best Skincare Tools
ZIIP HALO – Microcurrent & Nanocurrent Device
Best All-in-One for glow, lift, and everything in between. 20% Off Device + 30% Off Gels for Black Friday!
Why I love it (Using for 3+ years)
The app does everything: lymphatic drainage (reduce puffiness), collagen stimulation, pimple zapping, redness healing, skin care via gels, volumizing, and lifting. My skin glows and looks (at minimum) 5 years younger when I’m consistent–literally shaves the years right off my face. Better than Botox—no needles, no frozen face.
How It Works
Microcurrent = instant lift (72-hour sculpt). Nanocurrent = deep repair and will reduce the appearance of fine lines (28% collagen boost, 2024 study). It’s great at stimulating collagen production and improving skin as well stimulating the muscles, aiding circulation and drainage.
My Rotation
5 days/week (safe—brand says daily is fine, but giving your skin time for R&R is best). Pair with LED 2x/week for extra sun-spot fade.
Pros
The App is amazing! I love that the founder walks me through every step and explains how the process works. There are currently 17 treatments for customizing your ZIIP for whatever type of facial you’re looking for that day.
My favorite treatments are Collagen Boost, Instant Face Lift, Skin Barrier Repair, Tone Corrector, and Lips.
With Black Friday, you can try them too at 20% off the device + 30% off gels using code VANILLAZIIP.
I try to do all of them every night because the results are so good, but sometimes I just do the app’s Collagen Boost and Instant Face Lift for a 16 minute power session. I try really hard not to do just one thing, but the beautiful thing about this tool is you’ll still see mad results with just 5 minutes a day.
I love doing the Collagen Boost on repeat while watching Netflix. In fact, I completely eliminated an age spot just by sitting with my ZIIP while watching a show.

ZIIP lymphatic drainage before and after*
Cons
I’ll admit, washing off the gel is an extra step, but worth it! Especially now with Black Friday deals, there’s never been a better time to invest in your skin! Not sure whether you want this tool or the Nuface? Check out this article.
Dermalux Panel – Best LED for Targeted Healing
My sensitivity eraser.
Why I Love It (Using it 5 years+)
LED Color Isolation: Red light (wrinkles), blue (pimple healing), infrared (deep repair). No heat, just calm for my sensitive skin.
How It Works
Red Light (633NM)
Red light works by stimulating collagen and elastin production as well as increasing natural hydration within the skin. It’s great for treating those signs of aging. Use red and NIR together for pain therapy anywhere on the body.
Blue Light (415NM)
Perfect for treating acne-prone and blemished skin.
Near Infrared (830NM)
When I’m the most sensitive, I do Near Infrared as it works to strengthen and repair compromised skin without any product. Effective for treating rosacea and redness as it repairs and reduces irritation and redness. Also clinically effective for treating age spots and hyper-pigmentation.
My Rotation
2–3x/week while listening to a podcast
Pros
You can use this LED light therapy panel anywhere on the body (yay for pain relief!) and isolate the colors. It’s the in-office gold standard.
Cons
It’s expensive. If you are shopping on a budget, ZIIP Halo will do most of the same things.
You lose mobility if you like to multi-task. If you prefer to walk while masking, see my mask suggestion below.
Gua Sha Tools – Best Manual for Relaxation & Drainage
$20 spa in my palm for a facial massage.
Why I Love It (Using it 5+ Years)
Gua Sha feels so good! I love that it does a myriad of treatments, like a manual ZIIP Halo. This one is my favorite because of the tool options.
How It Works
Boosts circulation by manually moving things around.
My Rotation
At least once a week, 3–5 min facial with oil.
Pros
So easy on the budget! It does actually deliver results.
Cons
There’s a learning curve with this beauty tool and it’s way more work and concentration. I pretty much always have to go on youtube and watch someone else’s technique depending on what I’m trying to do. I wouldn’t call it relaxing if you’re concentrating on results.
CurrentBody RF Tool – Best for Deep Lines and sag
Radio Frequency is my deep forehead line assassin—microneedling minus the trauma.
Why I Love It (Using for 8+ months)
Heat targets my one deep 11—stimulate collagen without needles (I prefer it over microneedling devices). I’ve also found my skin tone/hyperpigmentation to be more even and my skin to be firmer. Works great alongside ZIIP for lift!
How It Works
Uses heat to minimize fine lines and wrinkles and more.
My Rotation
1x/week, post-shower.
Pros
The heat feels really good, it’s effective, and I can watch Netflix while I do it. When I miss my weekly treatment, I notice. Also, I’ve tried a couple at-home devices and this one is my favorite so far because it fits in small places like by the nose.
Cons
This one is a heavy hitter. You can overdo it if you aren’t careful, much like microneedling, which is not good for your skin cells. The temptation to do it more often is intense and you really shouldn’t. This is really more of a maintenance treatment than something you can do as part of your daily ritual.
CurrentBody LED Mask – Best Hands-Free for Sun Spots
Deep red zapped my sun spots—while I listen to podcasts.
Why I Love It
LED light therapy with deep red for more even tone.
How It Works
I’d call it 30% wrinkle + spot reduction with consistent use.
My Rotation
2–3x/week, 10 min
Pros
No effort. You can multi-task since it’s cordless, but I don’t since I don’t like to have my eyes open. I don’t know of any other mask with the deep NIR wavelength and I love that this mask tests each light and gives you a QR code to view the testing results yourself. There are also way more lights in this mask than most masks I’ve seen on the market.
Cons
Looks a little sci-fi and a little Halloween.
BeautyBio GLOfacial – Best Quick Pore Clear
3-min pimple popper—magic suction.
Why I Love It
Extracts debris better than manually and with less risk of infection.
How It Works
Cleans out your pores and exfoliates dead skin cells using water pressure.
My Rotation
I use the GloFacial when I have an active pimple.
Pros
I still can’t believe the first time I had a whitehead and sucked it out–overnight magic!
Cons
The suction is satisfying but I did not like using it all over my face.
Best Skincare Tools FAQs
1. Are skin care tools better than skincare actives for sensitive skin?
Yes—no irritation. I’ve rotated LED, RF, gua sha for over a year.
2. How often can I use ZIIP Halo?
5 days/week is safe and you can do multiple sessions at a time. I’ve been doing 5 + rest 2 days for years.
3. Do tools beat face masks?
100%—gentler, longer results. Think of tools like natural plastic surgery and injectables.
Ready to Ditch Actives for Good?
I’ve tried just about every “miracle” skin care serum and paid for it with redness and regret.
These 6 skincare devices are my at-home esthetician. They’re gentle, consistent, and actually work—no irritation, just results after years of daily rotation.
My routine:
ZIIP Halo 5 days/week (glow + lift)
LED therapy 2–3x (sun spots, redness)
RF 1x/week (deep lines)
Gua sha daily (relaxation + drainage)
Start small: Grab a gua sha ($20) or ZIIP (on sale this week).
