I’ve been testing Currentbody and their competitors for a long time. While they’re not the only brand making quality red light therapy devices, they consistently top the market by spotting flaws in competitors and fixing them in their own products.
Needless to say, I have a love affair with all things Currentbody, so expect my bias for it being one of the best red light therapy panels available. I practically begged them to partner with me a couple years ago because they do beauty devices better than most. And I’m finding, when they don’t make a product themselves, they tend to bring partner with those brands on their site.
So this is my second red light therapy panel. I wasn’t sure if anything could top my beloved Dermalux. And while I still think Dermalux is the gold standard in many ways, if I had to pay for it, I’d likely choose the Currentbody LED Light Therapy Panel.
The Tech
What to look for in any red light therapy products
Red light is best utilized between 630-660nm for stimulating collagen production, reducing inflammation, improving skin tone/texture, fading fine lines/wrinkles, aiding wound healing, redness, and scar tissue. 660 nm is frequently called out as a “gold standard” in many studies for skin rejuvenation and general anti-aging because it balances absorption and penetration well–but this is for isolated LED color therapy.
Near-Infrared (NIR) is most effective between 810-850nm. It is very effective for pain relief, muscle recovery, inflammation, circulation, and ATP production because it reaches deeper tissues.
Deep NIR is best used at 1064 nm, 1070 nm, or 1072 nm for deep lines, deep inflammation, and chronic pain–not a lot of devices do this helpful wavelength.
Blue Light is most effective between 405-420nm and does a great job killing acne-causing bacteria and reducing oil production for clearer skin. This light is amazing when combined with red light if you want to calm inflammation simultaneously.
Why Currentbody’s panel stands out
First off, Veritace® is why is stands out most to me. CurrentBody is the only LED mask brand to test every single bulb in every panel light to match clinical standards. This testing process is called Veritace®. Every mask includes a Veritace® card you can tap to see YOUR device’s test results – proof yours delivers clinical grade wavelengths the clinicals say work. This level of transparency and accuracy isn’t offered by any other LED brand on the market which is what makes it stand out.
I remember when I was first shopping around for red light devices just how few devices were actually backing their claims with scientific testing. Not just in the wavelength itself, but if their device actually matched what they said it would do.
Currentbody utilizes 633nm for their red light panel. It’s worth saying that some call 660nm the “gold standard” for red light because of its’ slightly deeper reach. However, CurrentBody smartly chose 633nm since it’s one of the most clinically proven wavelengths out there. 633nm kickstarts collagen production, smooths wrinkles, calms inflammation, and gives that glowing skin repair boost, especially on the surface levels where anti-aging magic happens most visibly.
They targeted 633nm for those proven skin-level perks that some devices miss if they only hit 660nm. Pairing red and near infrared light (830nm) and deep NIR (1072nm) wavelengths, it creates a variety of targeted depths that make this panel incredibly effective for both beauty wins and full body relief like my joint pain.
Design and Treatment Times
This is truly like going into a spa when you use it. You choose the mode you want to complete and it will automatically turn off when it’s done. So easy to use! Here are your choices:
Low
10 minutes directly on skin
I’ve really enjoyed using this panel because it’s a fairly large yet super portable one that works anywhere in my home. If you switch to “Low” mode (just 10 minutes), you can place it directly on the skin—perfect for targeted treatment. Especially for pain relief or body acne.
Clearing Low mode power output: 44 mW/cm²
Anti-Aging Low mode power output: 30 mW/cm²
If you have deep wrinkles, use it on low directly on your face since it’ll be basically the same as the mask results. Here’s my before and after from the light therapy mask I used for 30 days:
High
20 minutes 15cm (6 inches) away from face and body
My absolute favorite way to use it is for my face, neck and on the stand. I prefer this because it gives a nice, gentle dose without any heat buildup.
With it propped up on the stand, I can multitask like crazy: I’ve done laser hair removal, painted my nails, listened to podcasts, or even just scrolled and relaxed. Sure, I don’t always hit exactly 20 minutes or stay precisely 6 inches the whole time (life happens!), but that flexibility is what I love most—it fits into my day without feeling like a chore.
Clearing High mode power output: 85 mW/cm²
Anti-Aging High mode power output: 65 mW/cm²
One more thing about design: you can take it anywhere with you. You only need a plug when you charge it up, which I only do about every 8 sessions on high mode.
My Results
I would say my face results are identical to the mask (when used on low and directly on my face), but I wouldn’t use a face mask as a pain treatment. The shape is all wrong and much harder to have it sit well on my back. I’ve used it on my low back for my pain (sacroiliitis medical condition) and it was perfect. I’ve healed my redness, sensitivity, and even put it on my hands for wrinkles and dark spots. I definitely experienced improved skin health through my red light therapy sessions. I’ve also used it for a headache and had it completely disappear. It’s so nice to be have a panel that can be used for multiple body parts as needed.
One weirdly awesome side effect is I have reduced my prescription for glasses (so actual clinical results in my case) just by using red light therapy around 3-5 times per week. I never look directly at the lights, but I do think my exposure is high enough that it has been enhancing mitochondrial function. A quick google search will tell you 3 minutes of RLT exposure can help. More than that can have negative effects, so wear eye protection if you have a tendency to look at the lights themselves. Obviously results may vary hugely so consult your doctor! I’m also doing other things like going outside first thing in the morning before looking at screens and lights so my circadian rhythm is in check. I believe it’s never one thing that will cure or prevent issues, but I definitely think red and NIR has been my one constant.
Comfort, Safety and effectiveness, and drawbacks
When you use the device on high and 6 inches away, it’s very comfortable, but I think a big thing to weigh (besides money) is what position you like to be in. I admit to liking lying down with the panel over my face. I wish there was a bendable arm to the stand! But you can practice your box breathing and other things when it’s up. Overall though, anything that doesn’t have to touch your skin is incredibly comfortable!
I love the panel for anything pain related since I can strap it in place. The only place I’m not 100% comfortable is when it’s sitting directly on my face–it’s a bit heavy and I feel uncomfortable on my chin and nose. So I prefer when it’s 6 inches away when doing my face. For closeup comfort, I prefer the LED mask style since it is molded to sit directly on my face.
As far as safety, the panel comes with eye protection and I feel perfectly safe when using as directed. As with anything!
For effectiveness, it does what it says! As someone who owns 6 LED devices, I can tell you it is effective and does exactly as advertised. I personally love the creativity you can have when using it.
Value and Comparisons
I am blessed with a group of friends who love all things red light and we’re constantly coming up with new ways to use it. Sore nose after a cold? Red light. Stubbed toe? Red light. Your toddler fell down? Red light. If you want a lot of bang for your buck, go with a panel. I still like the Dermalux panel because of the color isolation and dome shape, but even the Dermalux doesn’t have the deep NIR like the new Currentbody panel. And the Dermalux is a steep price increase for such a small difference. And in real life, I rarely isolate colors even when I can.
I was looking up what masks and panels have the 1072 nm Deep NIR wavelength and the answer is large surgical healing panels (often full body). The added value with this alone is staggering for the price. If you want one device that does it all, this is it. You don’t need any of my other 5 red light therapy devices.
The only other thing I’d consider someday, is adding a separate green or yellow LED device (which I haven’t tried yet). They’re supposed to be great for hyperpigmentation and dark spots. But honestly, I’ve had great results with this panel and a little serum.
If you want an affordable device that does red, blue, Near Infrared, and Deep near Infrared, there is no device to compare. It’s the only one of it’s class. 5 stars all the way.
