The Vanilla Plum Edit
Best Treatment for Sunspots & Age Spots
Before treating a dark spot, I think it’s important to know what you’re actually looking at. Sunspots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation can look similar but often respond differently.
Not Every Dark Spot Is A Sunspot
One of the biggest things I learned while researching pigmentation is that we often lump every dark mark into the same category.
- βοΈ Sunspots (solar lentigines)
- πΈ Melasma
- β¨ Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH)
Understanding the difference changes which treatments make the most sense.
My Treatment Ranking
π₯ Prevention
Sunscreen, hats, UV-protective clothing, and preventing new damage are still my biggest priorities. Personally, I also pay attention to diet and choose to avoid seed oils as part of my overall skin-health approach.
π₯ Fractional Laser
The Tria fractional laser is becoming my favorite targeted at-home treatment specifically for existing sunspots and pigmentation.
π₯ Vitamin C + Niacinamide
These are still some of my favorite topical ingredients for brightening and supporting more even-looking skin.
4οΈβ£ Microcurrent
While I wouldn’t buy a ZIIP specifically for pigmentation, I do think nanocurrent can support an even skin tone, gently. My favorite app treatments are Problem Solver and Founder’s Favorite.
5οΈβ£ Red Light Therapy
I think of red light as supportive for healthier skin overall rather than my primary pigment treatment. I have noticed more even tone and lighter spots.
The Short Answer
If I wanted to fade existing sunspots today, I’d first make sure I wasn’t continuing to create new ones. Then I’d combine targeted treatments like fractional laser with proven topical ingredients, while supporting overall skin health through consistent habits.
How Long Does It Take?
Pigmentation is one of the slower skin concerns to improve. While everyone’s skin is different, I think it’s helpful to go into treatment with realistic expectations.
- Prevention: Starts immediately, but protects future skin rather than fading existing spots.
- Vitamin C + Niacinamide: Usually requires several weeks of consistent use before changes become noticeable.
- Red Light Therapy: Best thought of as long-term support rather than a quick pigment treatment.
- Fractional Laser (Tria): I’m currently evaluating my results over approximately 12 weeks before drawing final conclusions.
- Microcurrent: I use it as part of my overall skin-health routine rather than expecting it to erase pigmentation on its own.
For me, consistency matters much more than finding a single miracle treatment.
Which Option Fits You Best?
You’re trying to prevent new spots
Focus on sunscreen, protective clothing, and limiting unnecessary UV exposure before spending money trying to remove existing spots.
You already have visible sunspots
Fractional laser would currently be my first at-home treatment of choice.
You prefer a gentle routine
Vitamin C, niacinamide, and consistent skincare are slower but easier to incorporate into everyday life.
You already own a ZIIP
I would try the Problem Solver and Founder’s Favorite treatments on the App before adding another device immediately.
